Hummingbird

on

It is Hummingbird season here in the northeast hood. Everyone is putting out their feeders so they can capture a chance to marvel at such charming beauty. The Ruby Red Throat has always been my favorite but I will sit and watch any birds feed and interact any day of the week. The pictures I have included are from the internet as I have not been lucky or skilled enough to take any of my own (as of yet-still hopeful). I have included a few facts with links below if you are interested in learning more about these magnificent creatures.

The meaning of a hummingbird visit: Hummingbirds have a long history of folklore and symbolism in native cultures. … In Native American culture, hummingbirds are seen as healers and bringers of love, good luck, and joy. Hummingbird Spirit Animal meaning

Their name comes from the fact that they flap their wings so fast (about 80 times per second) that they make a humming noise.

A Hummingbirds diet primarily consists of flower nectar, tree sap, insects and pollen.

There are more than 300 species of hummingbirds, 12 of which summer in North America and winter in tropical areas.

Historically hummingbirds were killed for their feathers, today they face different but equally devastating threats, habitat loss and destruction are today’s hummingbird’s main threat.  Defenders of Wildlife gave great facts and information about the Hummingbird
